History:
In the heart of the massive Francis Marion National Forest are forty-three acres of low country refuge from the rapid pace of daily life. Sewee Coastal Retreat Center was acquired by the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1985 to provide a low country retreat for its members across the state.
Through the years the Center has offered day and overnight summer camps for children as well as hosting retreat, camping and picnic groups year-round and is in partnership with Clemson University offering environmental education camps to children state-wide each summer.
Surrounded by the Francis Marion National Forest, Sewee's property borders the Intercoastal Waterway with both dock and boat access ramp on-site overlooking the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge. Located halfway between Charleston and McClellanville, Sewee offers spectacular natural beauty to its guests as well as access to breath-taking barrier islands, "black water" kayaking and low country hiking. The history, culture and festivals of the Charleston area are only a short drive away.
In December 2007, the Board of Camps & Retreat Ministries chose to pause the operations at Sewee for the purpose of study and re-development. The plan is to develop, expand and re-open this facility as an adult retreat center serving the churches of South Carolina.
